I legitimately dislike telling this story. I like to think most things are explained by science and those things that can’t are just a matter of time and work. I think that’s part of what made this so strange.

In the summer between highschool and college, I was still driving my venerable 1994 Cavalier (pretty much identical to the open pictured below). It was my first car - a $250 inter-family-deal - with blown head gasket that managed to limp it’s way about 20k miles on nothing but stopleak and coolant.

Kinja'd!!!

One night, I decided to go war-driving (yes, it was back then ) with a buddy who lived across town. It was a pretty temperate night - not cold or hot. Not humid and dewy either. But given that was after 8pm and that we lived in what most people consider to be the sticks of Massachusetts, it was dark.

My town, despite the boom in the late 90s, still wasn’t anything close to a metropolis. The oldest graves in the graveyard on our street barely crested the 1910's, the cows only recently relented their population majority to people, and McDonalds was still a couple years away for setting up on our main road.

Ready to set off for my whopping 5 mile drive to my friend’s house, I went outside to get in my car. I had a strange feeling as I approached it. The kind of feeling I can only describe as that of being watched. Given that I didn’t lock my doors (and why would I?), I had the overwhelming feeling that a neighborhood kid was hiding in my backseat.

I pushed my face up the read driver side windows and I could see from the porch-light that there wasn’t anyone back there.

I got in, turned on the car, threw it into reverse and started backing out of the driveway. As I was reversing, the dome light started flickering. I figured I hadn’t shut my door very well so I pushed my foot to the brake, opened my driver side door, slammed it shut, and started backing up again.

But the dome light kept flickering. As soon as I pulled out of the driveway, I pulled over on the grass by the neighbor’s house. Figuring that it was the trunk latch that got loose, I got out and headed for the trunk. I opened up it up, slammed it shut, and got back in. I started off again and without fail - the dome light began to flicker again.

So I though - FINE, there’s only 3 more doors left. It must be one of them. I pulled over a couple houses down the street on a slight forward grade. I put the car in park, un-buckled my seat belt, and reached for my door handle.

No later than me reaching for my door handle did a hear a familiar sound - one of the rear doors opening up. I whipped my head around to see what was going on. My eyes fixed on the rear passenger door as it finished opening, stopped, and about a second or two later, slammed itself shut.

I sat in my car for a minute - maybe it was 20 seconds - maybe it was 2 minutes. All I know is that time - at that moment - didn’t matter. What I had just seen defied logic. An object at rest stays at rest. Unless it’s a rear passenger side door on a 1994 Cavalier on a dark night in Massachusetts.

I put the car in drive, started off again, and the dome light didn’t flicker again as long as I owned the car.

The kicker to this story is that when I got home, I told my mother what had happened. She asked me where I pulled over and I told her. She laughed and said she had a strange experience over there a couple days earlier when she was taking a walk. As she passed the old tire swing (yes, like in a damn goosebumps book), she heard a kid’s voice say “Hey! Hey! Can you help me?” She looked around, didn’t see anyone, and kept going.

So regardless of science, I know what I saw. Yes, human memory sucks. Yes, people can “imagine” things - not something I’ve been prone to. To this day, it’s still a mystery.

The perfect thing to curl up in bed and read. Thank you. And I don’t want to read any logical explanations. Sometimes a little mystery is ok. Fine, it’s ok when it happens to someone else.

To be fair, at least your car didn’t love you back by having no windshield wipers (they only work on HI), a new battery replacement, constantly stuck windows (hello Good to Go pass!) and a transmission that’s now slipping in second gear.

Toyota quality my ass.

Ghosts are real, we’re not. Spooky but great story.

Nicely written, thanks for posting. Nice that you posted a description without jumping to some conclusion like a TV show.

Weird stuff happens, I guess. Would be cool to know the explanation for this one though.

Neat story.

Ghosts and decepticons have already been mentioned, so I'll submit that it was a glitch in the Matrix. Or, rather, Cavalier (rimshot).

I’m guessing your “passenger” got tired of you constantly stopping to check doors that he/she figured “I’ll take the next car I don’t trust this guy”
